Residents and business owners undergoing sewer pipe replacements are embarking on a major project. Thanks to advancements in the industry, services have become more efficient and less invasive. At M & B Services serving the greater Minneapolis Minnesota area, they are your trusted pipe lining provider, we offer complex solutions like complete replacements using trenchless technologies.
What is Trenchless Technology?
Trenchless solutions eliminate the need for digging, allowing repairs to be made within the existing pipes. This means we can leave your property looking exactly as it did before, while ensuring a fully functional sewer system. These methods are ideal for major sewer repairs or replacements because they simplify the process and offer the best solutions for each situation.
Our trenchless services include pipe lining and pipe bursting, both of which provide excellent results with minimal disruption.
Pipe Lining
Pipe lining, also known as cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), is a process used to replace main sewer lines without digging. If your existing pipes are in reasonably good condition, we can reline them with an epoxy liner. The process begins by thoroughly cleaning and inspecting the pipes. Next, we cut a felt tube to match the section of the pipe that needs replacement. The epoxy-coated tube is then pushed through the system using specialized machinery.
Once in place, we steam and inflate the tube to cure it. After cooling and hardening, this newly formed pipe inside the old pipe is ready to last up to 50 years, given proper maintenance such as regular cleaning.
Pipe Bursting
Another trenchless option is pipe bursting, which allows for the replacement of weakened or damaged sewer pipe sections without a full excavation. As the name suggests, this method involves breaking apart an old pipe to install a new one. A drilling head is used to burst the existing pipe, shattering it into small pieces that are pushed into the surrounding soil. As the old pipe is burst, a new pipe is simultaneously pulled through the space.
Once the new pipe is in place, we seal it to the remaining sections, leaving you with a fully functional line.
Signs You Need Pipe Replacement or Repair
No sewer system lasts forever, and it’s essential to recognize when repairs or replacements are needed. Contact a trenchless contractor if you notice any of the following signs:
- Pooling water above buried sewer lines
- Persistent sewer odors
- Foundation or slab damage
- Frequent drainage or sewage issues
The Replacement Process
Sewer pipe replacement can be carried out using trenchless methods like pipe bursting, or through traditional excavation. In trenchless pipe bursting, specialized equipment breaks up the damaged sewer pipe, replacing it with a new one without disturbing the surface above. Traditional methods, on the other hand, involve exposing the old pipe and physically removing it to install a new one.
